Product Description

1800’s Persian Tehran Bidjar Senneh Rust Gold Black Aqua Museum W/ Hanging 4×6

4′-0″x6′-0″ (122cm x 183cm), Even Pile all over, still very strong structure, Great Condition for the Age, DSC01445

As shown on the back there are some rings sown to the back, indicating the piece had been hanging rather than on the floor for decades so it is probibly one of the reasons that it has been preserved til now. I still do not know the real origin, the density of the work tells me it is a Bidjar, but the rare combined geometric-curvilinear patters tell me it might be from Tehran, whether it is a Bidjar or Tehran it is definitely a museum piece

It is very hard to find rugs and carpets handmade in Tehran, the capital of Iran as old as this piece, except in museums. Tehran has stopped weaving rugs over 100 years ago. That’s our first guess about this rug since it is very close to Tehran weave, however due to the closeness of the design to the Kurdish Bidjar and Senneh rugs, our second guess is Bidjarr or Senneh. The antique Persian Bidjar carpet, known as the ‘Iron Rug’ of Persia, is
an extremely dense woven oriental carpet from Kurdistan in the north of
Iran. The tight weave of antique Bidjar rugs makes them exceptionally
strong and durable for use in heavily trafficked areas. This strength
and resilience make them a favorite in traditional country interiors
where the prevalent palette of navy blue, cherry red, brown, light blue,
pink, yellow, ocher, beige and ivory in antique oriental rugs are the
perfect companions to American or English furniture. Antique Bidjar rugs
tend to display time-honored Persian formats with an emphasis on bold
medallions, spandrels, repeating arabesques, dramatic borders; often
utilizing repeated herati patterns of flowers centered within diamonds,
with four curled leaves that resemble fish issuing from each diamond. It
is in the lush wool quality, unusually saturated coloration and playful
interpretation of well-known designs that antique Persian Bidjar
carpets excel.
